Bloyd House Roof

Our new home at 600 Tomlinson gets a new roof!

Before the keys were in our hand, the board of directors was talking about one thing above all else. “How do we fix that roof?” Over the years, the roof on 600 Tomlinson had been patched and fixed here and there but hadn’t gotten a completely new roof in quite some time. Because of this, there had been water getting into the house causing damage to the plaster and wallpaper on the upper levels.

After purchasing the house, our focus immediately went towards getting a new roof on the building. Through a fast track grant from West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History (WVDACH) and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts (WVCA) in addition to generous donations from the Evan G. Roberts Charitable Trust and community members, we were able to get a new roof.

After waiting through the winter for weather to improve, the first decent day in spring we had Saints Roofing and Construction ready to go. We all stood on the porch and watched as the entire street filled with crew and equipment. At least four vans pulled in front of the house filled with workers who were ready to start. Company vehicles kept coming from all directions and a large flatbed with all the materials needed pulled up and started to unload. The roofers wasted no time and immediately started to file up onto the roof. We were in awe!

We had a crew of over 20 people all working in some way on our roof. I guess we got lucky being one of the only jobs that day. Once they started, there seemed to be no stopping them. Old shingles were flying off the roof everywhere you looked and before you knew it, they were sending up new pieces of wood to re-deck the roof. Their progress on day one amazed us. By the time we all went home after our meetings for the day, they had started to re-shingle the house already, something we didn’t expect until at least halfway through day two!

Day two and three was a little calmer. We had one work crew who worked for seemingly as long as the sun would allow them. We had been skeptical in prior meetings about a brand new roof in just three days, but here we were after three days of work with a brand new roof! No more picking up shingles from the ground after a wind storm and no more listening to drips up on the third floor from the holes in the roof. Plus, the new color looks GREAT!
