Joseph Tomlinson Jr.
1745-1825
Captain Joseph Tomlinson Jr. is the founding settler of Elizabethtown, now Moundsville. He set up his home in the flats of Grave Creek and eventually founded a town named after his wife, Elizabeth. The Mound that stands in the midst of Moundsville is certainly one of the wonders of the world. No one knows by whom it was built nor does he know when it was built nor how it was built. It was evidently built by the hands of man, and that being the case, it is entitled to be classified as one of the wonders of the world.
Joseph Tomlinson seems to have lived near it for some time before he saw it. It has been stated that the first time he saw it was one evening as he returned home from hunting, with a load of game. He came up to what appeared to him to be a hill and in the way of his progress in getting home with a heavy load. He laid down his game and started along the foot of the hill to make an investigation of the nature of the hill and find a gap through which he might pass homeward without climbing so rugged a side as was presented to him.
Samuel Andrew Jackson Cockayne
1841-1904
Samuel A. J. raised purebred, fine-wooled American Merino sheep and took first prize at the International Exhibition held in Philadelphia in 1876 for “one fleece of good Merino wool.” Other awards would follow and the Cockayne stock would be sought after by British and Australian, as well as American, breeders. The Cockayne farm became internationally known and was even featured in the Illustrated Atlas of the Upper Ohio River Valley from Pittsburgh PA to Cincinnati OH.
His home, the Cockayne Farmstead, was built by his father, Bennet, in 1850 and still stands along Route 2 in Glen Dale, a town named after the Cockayne’s farm. His daughters and son became well known in Marshall County high society. Now I’m trying to fill in words so I can look to see how it will look when the words are fully in there because it will look better than just having a blank spot where there should be words. How many times can i say the word word in this little paragraph? That’s all I’m trying to get right now. I tried to just copy find a grave like I did for Mr. Tomlinson, however there was only Sam AJ’s will on findagrave, which was pretty interesting to look through regardless. Maybe I should have copied it. It would’ve been a lot easier to do than trying to make us something to say here.
